Help Sveta Korovina In Her Journey to Recovery
Donation protected
Unfortunately bad things happen to good people. Mid May, the life of our dear friend Sveta Korovina and her family had changed forever. Sveta had no underlying medical conditions and was very conscientious about her health. The family was preparing their daughter for her senior year of high school and celebrating Sveta’s new job at Washington University.
On May 19th, Sveta was at home with her husband Igor and Daughter Nadia when she suddenly called out for her daughter to call 911 and collapsed. As family arrived to the Emergency Room, they were told that the neck pain Sveta was experiencing for the past week, was the result of a blood clot that led to a severe thrombolytic (clotting) stroke. Family was devastated to find out that the rapid decline while at the Emergency Room was a second stroke; a major hemorrhagic (brain bleed) stroke.
Sveta had to have emergency brain surgery, and for 3 weeks she didn’t wake up. She was placed on life support and on a breathing machine. She also lost movement on the right side of her body, as well as her eyesight. In the Intensive Care Unit, Sveta was having trouble weaning off the ventilator and waking up. Doctor’s prognosis’ were grim. They didn’t think with the severity of the 2 major strokes Sveta had a chance of waking up or recovery. But the family didn’t lose hope and continued to focus on Sveta and take one day at a time.
Then one day she opened her eyes and since then started making slow progress even though Sveta lost her ability to speak, swallow, move and her eyesight on the right side. After the ICU, Sveta was moved to a rehab facility, where she is working very hard and currently showing significant improvement in swallowing, feeding, movement, and even partially regained her speech. The plan is to discharge on August 29th from Rehab to their home. Rita Pernik, Sveta’s sister will be giving us updates on her heath status.
Sveta’s job at Washington University was very supportive and allowed her to go on unpaid medical leave even though she only worked there for a few months. Her medical leave ended on August 12th but the family will buy Cobra insurance for her to ensure continuation of coverage. Unfortunately, it will only cover a few hours of rehab a week when daily speech, occupational, and physical therapy are vital to Sveta’s successful recovery.
With our help I hope she will have the appropriate medical equipment and rehabilitative care services. As hard as the family tried to take care of finances on their own, this situation is extremely tough, leaving them in a difficult position to give Sveta a fighting chance that she deserves. I believe we can bring a little ease to Sveta’s family and her upcoming recovery journey. I hope we can help by sharing the post, donating, and keeping Sveta in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you in advance for all your support!
