Two weeks have passed since the surgery, and Suzzie still has good days and bad days. The guilt of not being able to save her is changing me. My mood depends on how she feels each day. There are moments when her gums turn grey, she breathes heavily, and she is so exhausted that she cannot even get up from her bed.

For some people this may sound exaggerated, but those who love animals know they are family.

I am telling you honestly, I feel physically unwell when I see her suffering. Suzzie now needs blood transfusions. They are expensive, and I cannot afford them. This is the last option, and I feel trapped, like I am watching without being able to do more.

I feel like a failure as a dog owner.

I know there are many people who have been through this, who have felt the helplessness of not being able to save their companion.

The guilt is overwhelming… a voice in my head telling me I have not done enough. But the truth is, I am not ready to let her go.

I don’t even remember what my life was like before her, and I don’t want to go back there. It feels so unfair.

Suzzie has always been there for us. She wiped our tears, waited for us at the door, and jumped with joy when she saw us. I miss her the way she used to be. But even now, as fragile as she is, she is still Suzzie.

Do you know what I see in her eyes?“Mum, I want to live.”

To sit in the sun. To run after birds. To be in our garden. To ask us for food. To follow us around the house. To wait for us.

I don’t want to be just a witness.
