Dear Supporters of Native American Indian Heritage, Names, Images & History,
Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) is a nonprofit 501C3 established in 2014, to stop the eradication of Native American names and images from high schools, colleges and professional sports teams. NAGA is a collective of American Indian enrolled members and tribal descendants who support the beautiful artistry of native identifiers in sports and the mainstream.
NAGA supports the respectful use of Native American names and imagery in sports, education, and public life. NAGA has visited many schools, From Susquehanna, PA Indians to Sandusky, MI Redskins and too many to more mention, educating their communities to understand the true meaning behind their school identities.
Which brings us to May 2025 in New York, The Massapequa Chiefs are under attack, the same attack that has or will eventually come to your hometown. The New York Board of Regents passed a directive prohibiting all public schools in the state from using American Indian names and imagery. Education Secretary Linda McMahon held a press conference in the Massapequa High School to announce the Office of Civil Rights investigation concluded the Board of Regents edict violated the 14th Amendment by discriminating based upon race. Three NAGA board members were at the press conference in support of Massapequa Chiefs.
On Thursday, May 29, our legal team filed a civil action in U.S. District Court, New York on behalf of NAGA. Our suit seeks to enjoin the Board's action -- the Native Name Ban - as a plain violation of the Fourteenth Amendment, specifically "the Equal Protection Clause," because it singles out one racial group for erasure, while allowing other historic groups, e.g. Spartans, Vikings, or Fighting Irish, to be celebrated.
You may wonder why this matter concerns you? It does because a win in New York creates a nationwide precedent to strike down all current (NY, CA, ME, OR, WA, CO) and any future state laws discriminating against American Indians. THEIR FIGHT IS ALL OUR FIGHT!!! Please donate to this legal fund that will help to preserve or return your school's proud Native traditions.
