Thank you for visiting the fundraiser page for Susan Sorrell Hill.

Recently, Susan was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer which has kept her housebound since May. She recently spent a brief period in the hospital but she is now home focusing on healing with the help of local nutrition experts, doctors, health specialists and family. She is fully confident that an integrative healing approach will be successful.

You may know Susan as a forty-five year resident of Nevada County…a quiet, creative ‘old guard’ member of our community. Until recently, she and her partner of thirty-five years, Ernest Caballero, (“joined at the hip” they have been teased) could be seen shopping at all of the Health Food Stores, making good use of the Library, and walking the streets and trails of Nevada City and Sierra College.

If you are an art lover, you may recognize Susan’s paintings (and Ernest’s sculptures) from the Mowen-Solinsky Gallery, or remember many of the illustrations she has made for KVMR, Peaceful Valley Farm Supply and the many distinctive logos for local businesses over the years, including the Briar Patch Co-op.

There is a saying that “Major illness never leaves you where it found you.” Susan feels that this illness has opened her heart in gratitude for the lessons learned, perspectives shifted, and gratitude for literally everything and everyone…even the most difficult.

Although Susan has always been proficient and clever in many areas, it is a new experience to ask for and accept assistance. Your support will ease the stress of financial burdens so she can return to health, and get back to drawing, painting and walking. It would also re-expand Ernest’s current role from loving, dedicated caregiver back to sculptor extraordinaire. If you are an artist, you will know how hard it is to be away from making art for so long.
