Help Susan Schenk Regain Independence and Pay Medical Bills

Hello!
My name is Susan Schenk. I am the owner of The Bakery Depot, a local bakery in the Shooks Run Neighborhood, I have been the house chef and caterer at Temple Shalom for the past 20 years, and for the past 14 years I’ve been an avid cyclist. I am known for always being on the go.

Unfortunately, in the past year my life has changed. In February 2024 I had to have an emergency surgery performed that fused multiple vertebrae in my spine, and while I am working hard every day to get back to my normal lifestyle, the road to full recovery is a long one.

Essentially, these past 8 months I have been teaching my nerves how to do everything again - how to walk, how to cook, and how to build my strength back up. Because of this I have been attending weekly sessions of Physical and Occupational Therapy, and I am happy to say I am making progress, slowly but surely. However, that is all about to change.

Due to insurance limitations, I have been informed that my PT and OT sessions will stop at the end of October. It is IMPERATIVE that I keep exercising to maintain and build my strength. Cycling is my passion (and many people know I used to be a dedicated runner as well) and my doctor has told me that cycling is the best way for me to continue maintaining and building my strength. Sadly, however, my road bike is no longer an option for me to ride.

Because of this, I would like to purchase a Recumbent Trike, which has three wheels and is lower to the ground (which makes it a much safer and more stable option). But recumbent bikes are very EXPENSIVE! All of this combined with my constant medical bills and trying to keep The Bakery Depot active (which is still open and running thanks to my dedicated and INCREDIBLE friends) has put me into a difficult situation.

It is very uncomfortable for me to be in this position. I have learned though that sometimes you have to ask for help. Therefore, I am seeking financial assistance; I would like to get back to a normal lifestyle and a recumbent bike will not only help me get stronger but will also give me more access to the outdoors and improve my mental health. My husband Michael has been working day and night to help us and support us, but it is not enough.

All funds generated from this campaign will be used to help me purchase a recumbent bike and pay my medical expenses. Any other funds generated will go towards keeping The Bakery Depot’s doors open. Thank you in advance, and please know that I truly appreciate it.
