Hello, and thank you for taking a moment to read our story.
My name is Roxice, and I am raising funds to support my mother, Williett, a 68-year-old widowed mother and grandmother who is currently battling HER2 Positive Carcinoma Breast Cancer of the right breast.
About My Mom
Williett lives in South Carolina and retired in 2019 after 33 1/2 years of dedicated service at St. Francis Hospital, now known as Bon Secours Mercy Health. She worked first as a unit secretary and a monitor technician. She has always been a warm, nurturing, and faith-filled woman who enjoys reading, studying scripture, and participating in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF).
When she feels well, she loves to crochet blankets for her granddaughters and send inspirational morning messages to loved ones. She is a proud mother and grandmother who has always made her health a priority, faithfully getting annual checkups and mammograms. That’s why the diagnosis came as such a shock.
The Diagnosis
In March 2025, following a routine mammogram, we received the devastating news: HER2-positive breast Cancer, with a tumor measuring 9 centimeters. According to her doctors, this tumor may have been growing silently for over a year and a half. HER2+ is a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer due to the overexpression of HER2 proteins, which cause tumors to grow and spread quickly.
Despite regular screenings, the tumor had gone undetected, partly due to the density of her breast tissue and the tumor’s “spongy” feel. She had to undergo two biopsies, only partially covered by insurance. Since then, the emotional and financial toll has been overwhelming.
A Heavy Journey
Life before the diagnosis, while not without challenges, was manageable. Mom already used a walker due to arthritis, but she remained active in her own way. Now, she faces chemotherapy, possible surgery, and radiation. Her treatment plan includes:
6 rounds of chemotherapy every 21 days (starting on May 1-3, 2025)
Follow-up scans and potential surgery (tentatively in August/September 2025)
Additional radiation treatments (TBA)
Each week of the treatment we travel 162 miles total (54 miles round trip, 3 times per week) to get to her appointments. Living outside the city means everything is far—pharmacies, hospitals, and support resources.
I live in Alabama, over 300 miles away (a 623-mile round trip), and have four daughters—my youngest just graduated from high school. I work full-time at a K-8 school and have had to take intermittent FMLA leave to be present with my mom. It’s a balancing act between work, parenting, and caregiving, but one I take on with love.
How You Can Help
This GoFundMe is to help cover:
Medical expenses not covered by insurance
Travel costs (gas, vehicle maintenance, etc.)
Comfort items to help with side effects from chemotherapy (e.g., a bedside commode, supportive bedding, medications)
Household bills and necessities during treatment
Our greatest hope is that my mom can focus on healing without the additional burden of financial stress.
Every donation, no matter the size, will directly support her journey. If you are unable to give financially, sharing this page or connecting us with resources or grants for HER2+ cancer patients would be just as meaningful.
My mom is a woman of deep faith, humility, and gratitude. She believes in the power of prayer and community. We thank you in advance for your generosity, your prayers, and your support.
With heartfelt thanks,
Roxice Gibson and Family
