Help Support Visually Impaired Friend

Friends. This fierce, kind, talented, spiritual, artistic, loving, funny, and all around bad-ass individual is one of my dearest friends Renay Miller. Until one year ago, Ren worked in the Arapahoe County Jail as a Peer Specialist, helping people with severe mental illness to begin to envision and work on their recovery. She had a dedicated group of incarcerated men meditating with her daily, talking about past trauma that led to their charges, and embarking on wellness journeys they had never imagined for themselves.

Renay suffers from uveitis and glaucoma, and her doctors at the University of Colorado - Anschutz are fighting hard to save what vision she has left.  Ren has suffered through countless and ongoing eye surgeries and frequent painful injections of chemotherapy medication in her eyes. Ren fought persistently for a year to get on disability while progressively losing her vision, grieving the loss of her career, and healing from her own trauma; the extreme stress and inflammation led to an even more rapid decline in vision. Ren managed all this with tremendous grace, faith, and hope, turning to art, music, and meditation to get her through.

A few months ago, Ren was finally awarded disability for stat blindness by the State of Colorado, but they failed to approve any retroactive payments, so the total of her first check was $783 - only enough to keep the lights and heat on and to buy some groceries. She is currently seven months behind on rent, but thankfully, her landlords are incredible humans who have been cheering her on and waiting patiently to be paid; they know she is a hard worker and has a legitimate disability that is preventing her from paying any bills right now. But they can't afford to wait any longer; in fact, Ren has only until 9/9/20 to raise over $12,000 for back rent in order to avoid eviction.

Ren is working really hard to appeal the state's decision with the help of her team of doctors. She needs support right away to pay all back rent, to pay for utilities, to buy food, and really to avoid becoming homeless. This is dire. Please consider helping out a truly wonderful individual during this tough time. Ren has helped countless people in the community living with chronic and persistent mental illness and addiction; It would be amazing if the community would give back to her right now. Thank you friends for considering and sharing widely! <3 Love you all...muah!
