Friends and family and generous strangers- my 6 year old nephew, Gideon, has Cerebral Palsy and will be having a Dorsal Rhizotomy on 11/5/25 at Norton Children’s Hospital. Basically this surgery cuts some nerves off of the spine that are causing his calves and hamstrings to always be tensed up. He has taken meds and undergone therapies and tried other things prior to his parents considering an invasive procedure. This surgery will profoundly add to Gideon’s quality of life. He does walk now with braces but is quite accident prone= trips and falls more often due to imbalance and tightness in his muscles. My brother Josh is a single dad to 4 kids age 7 and under, including Gideon. Josh has custody of his kids half of the time and works 10-12 hour days during the week on the other days that he does not have his children. For this surgery Gideon will be in the hospital at least 3 days and then will be in rehab a minimum of 2 weeks but could be substantially longer based on several factors in his healing. Josh needs to take as much time off work as he can to be at the hospital and rehab facility with Gideon while he is recovering but only has 2-3 days of vacation time saved up. Josh has been proactive and when he isn’t already working or caring for his kids he is trying to make extra money in advance by DoorDash Dashing and mowing lawns, etc, but those don’t pay much. I’m sure you understand that being a single dad with 4 little kids already has Josh on a tight budget and he cannot afford to take the time off that is needed to be with his son without our help. I am asking y’all to assist him financially- all of this money will go to pay his monthly bills, extra gas and cost of food while having to spend so much time to and from the hospital, and potentially towards childcare if there are days when family cannot watch his kids as he cannot keep his other 3 young children at the hospital or rehab center the entire time he is up there. We are looking into a Mealtrain separately through his church family as well for people to bring meals to his home when he is at home with his other kids since he will not have time to be preparing food throughout this.
