As we entered into 2021, we all hoped for better times...
Unfortunately for Tom the hope of returning back to his job at Disney and meeting with family and friends took a turn on March 22, 2021.
Tom was diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer that had spread to the blood, liver and lymphatic system. Currently Tom have a 10 cm (4”) long tumor in his colon, and two smaller tumors on the right side of his liver, each approximately 1 cm (0.4”) in diameter.
In order to combat the cancer, Tom's doctors have put Tom on chemotherapy for the next 3 months were he will be getting a large dose of chemo administered in the hospital every other Wednesday.
Tom's doctors have already attached a chemo-pump to his chest that will keep pumping chemotherapy into his body for 48 hours after each treatment.
It also means that Tom will be having weekly blood tests and doctor visits to make sure that the treatment is working properly.
This is only the first step..
After the 3 months of chemotherapy, the next steps would be for Tom to have a surgery to remove the tumors in his liver followed with radiation therapy to combat the colorectal tumor. After radiation therapy his doctors will look into the possibility of another surgery to remove the colorectal tumor with follow up treatments.
While Tom uses all his energy to fight and defeat this cancer, he and his wife will need help with their bills, both medical and home. Knowing Tom he will return to work as soon as he can, however at this time we want them to focus on what is important and that is to defeat this cancer. Tom is only 40 years old and has his entire life ahead of him.
Tom and his wife has always been very generous and opened up their home for bbq, video and board game nights. Providing home project advice, lending out tools and helping their family, friends and neighbors out when needed. They have never asked for anything in return. Tom and his wife are staying as positive as they can in this situation and they are ready to fight.
We hope that you will join us in helping to ease the financial burden that comes with this diagnosis. Even with insurance, the cost of treatment are extremely high and unknown.
So if you have worked with Tom at Akershus and listened to all his fun fact info, been to his house and lost the duck hunt video game, burnt a steak or two on his grill or tasted his amazing tractor waffles and just know Tom as the nice, caring and good guy as we all do, now is the time we all come together and show our help and support.
We are not asking you to donate an entire paycheck, you give what you are comfortable with. We appreciate and thank you all in advance for the love, generosity and amazing support you are all giving Tom and his wife.
All donations will 100% go to Tom's fight and for him to use as he seems fit in his battle against cancer.
