Tommy Velez has been courageously battling cancer for the past 22 years. Within the last two years, he received another devastating diagnosis of stage four renal cancer. Despite the odds, with his Oncology Dr’s diagnosis with cancer for the third time in the last 22 years, Tommy has continued to fight with incredible strength and determination, never allowing cancer to define or defeat him.

Tommy is a devoted single father to four beautiful daughters, who are his greatest motivation and the reason he continues to push forward each day. Throughout his 22-year battle with cancer, Tommy has always worked two jobs to provide for his family. Even on the hardest days, when he didn’t feel well and his body was fighting exhaustion and illness, Tommy continued to show up, push forward, and provide for his daughters without complaint.

On Tuesday, December 9th, Tommy experienced a sudden and critical medical emergency after developing a severe headache which lead to a stroke. Diana, his girlfriend quickly rushed Tommy to Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital, where doctors performed a CT scan and discovered a brain bleed. Due to the seriousness of his condition, Tommy was life-flighted to Memorial Hermann Medical Center in the Texas Medical Center.

Upon arrival, a specialized team of neurosurgeons immediately examined Tommy and determined that emergency surgery was required. He was taken straight into surgery to remove a tumor from his brain. The following day, he was very critically ill and experienced a sudden seizure and was then put in surgery a 2nd time to relieve the pressure in brain from the swelling.  

Since his admission to the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, Tommy has endured three major surgeries. His journey has included moments of hopeful progress as well as significant challenges, but through it all, Tommy has shown the heart of a true fighter. He continues to battle daily with courage, faith, and resilience.

We are praying continuously and holding strong faith that Tommy will overcome this tremendous hurdle and return home to his family and four daughters. While the road to recovery will be long and demanding, Tommy is not walking it alone.
