On June 4, 2025, what was supposed to be a “simple back surgery” changed my dad, Tommy's, life forever. A few hours after the procedure, he came out paralyzed from the T7 down. He is now classified as an ASIA A Complete paraplegic, which means the chances of recovery are slim to none.

Since then, Dad has spent 8–12 weeks in rehab at Baylor in Dallas, working tirelessly to adjust to this new reality. But now that he’s home, the challenges are overwhelming. Life—and retirement—look completely different than what he and his wife Tammy had worked for all these years.

Every day necessities now come with enormous costs: ramps built into the home, doctor’s appointments, specialized wheelchairs, lift systems for his room, and equipment to help him transfer safely from bed to chair or into a vehicle. On top of that, Tammy suffered a stroke a few years ago and cannot drive. To regain some independence and mobility, they need a modified vehicle with hand controls and accessibility features.

Anyone who knows our family knows asking for help doesn’t come easy. But without support, it will be nearly impossible for my dad to have the independence and quality of life he deserves and worked hard for all of his life.
