On Saturday, April 12, during our bike club’s anniversary ride, an unexpected accident changed everything. While riding together, Theo and Karson fell. Karson, thankfully wearing a helmet, is okay. But Theo, in the act of protecting Karson, took the brunt of the fall—landing on his face and sustaining severe injuries.
Theo was knocked unconscious. He broke his nose, jawbone, and orbital bone, and required stitches on his eyebrow, lip, nose, and tongue. Even more devastating, he also broke the same leg he had only just recovered from after a previous ankle fracture.
He was rushed to the ER where he underwent emergency fasciotomy surgery to relieve critical pressure in his leg. Both sides of his lower leg had to be cut open to prevent permanent muscle damage, followed by 10 days of wound vac treatment to manage swelling.
On the 11th day, surgeons were finally able to set his bones. He had to spend a total of 15 days in the ER. The damage included a broken tibia and fibula, stabilized with 13 screws, over 200 staples, a bone graft, and several skin grafts.
The road ahead is long: three months of no weight-bearing, and a full year of physical therapy. But the good news is—Theo will walk again, and yes, he will ride again.
This has been heartbreaking for our family, especially after already enduring his previous injury. But we’re holding onto hope, strength, and the overwhelming support from our community.
Thank you for standing with us.
