Hello, I am sharing this as a neighbour and friend of a very special little girl in our community, Eve Hern.

Eve is five years old, and she is the kind of child who doesn’t just walk into a room, she fills it. She is bold, bright, wildly creative, and so beautifully herself. She loves to draw, create, and play with her friends and her brother Noah, and she tells stories about her day with a hilarious, matter-of-fact honesty that stays with you long after. Beneath all of that spark is the kindest little heart, one that has already left a mark on so many of us.

A few weeks ago, Eve began experiencing serious eye discomfort. On April 13th, after a specialist appointment at McMaster Hospital, her parents, Tom and Steph, received devastating news that Eve has a brain tumour. Even writing those words doesn’t quite feel real.

On April 17th, Eve underwent brain shunt surgery. In the coming weeks, she will begin six weeks of radiation treatment while doctors continue to assess the severity of the tumour. Eve is incredibly strong and courageous, but the road ahead is uncertain, and it’s one no child or family should ever have to face.

Alongside the emotional weight of this journey, there are very real financial pressures. Time away from work, travel for treatment, and the day-to-day costs of being present for Eve during this critical time will add up quickly.

The Hern family are the kind of people who show up quietly and consistently for others, with deep kindness, faith, and generosity. Now it’s our turn to show up for them, to surround them with love, and to help carry some of what they should not have to carry alone.
