The early part of this year Kevin started to experience pains in his right hip that were sometimes excruciating. He suffered through as he's stubborn and finally when he couldn't stand the pain any longer and knowing it was only getting worse instead of better he decided to go into the doctor the beginning of June. His diagnosis was a right hip impingement. He was taken off of work to rest and be non weight bearing as much as possible in hopes this would help with a follow up appt with his doctor in about 6 weeks. One morning during this time he got out of bed and went down on his knees as his hip gave out. He continued to rest and be as non weight bearing as he could until one night the pain was unbearable and landed him in the emergency room. After hours of being there he was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of Avascular Necrosis and Transient Osteoporosis. This diagnosis meant that his hip bone was permanently dying which was confirmed with a x-rays and MRIs his femur was also starting to deteriorate. Avascular necrosis is rare only affecting fewer than 200,000 per year in the US along with the Transient Osteoporosis being rare. After 3 doctors opinions the tough decision was made to go ahead with a surgery that would put a rod in his femur and a gama-nail in his hip which was done on July 12th. He started off after returning home with a walker and then graduated to a cane. His recovery has been longer than expected and his short term disability only lasted 8 weeks with long term disability not taking effect until 6 months from his first day off of work which wouldn't be until December. He has since been given a clearance from his doctor to return to work but with his job being what it is they don't feel that there is a light duty position available at this time and his return has been denied until he is able to return until all restrictions have been lifted. At this time there is no known date of when he will be able to go back to work. Mel has been working and trying to do her best to manage the finances but the savings has almost been depleted with Kevin's income not coming in for the past for almost two months now. Medical bills along with utilities, car insurance, etc and now health insurance to keep coverage in place has made it impossible for them to make ends meet
