Help support Taco’s treatment

Hi, my name is Lucy and I’m trying to raise funds for my newly adopted dog Taco. I adopted her 3 weeks ago, I was told by her rescue that she was a healthy dog. After paying her adoption fee, signing a contract and driving away with her I noticed in her passport that she had tested positive for heartworm.

I messaged the rescue right away to ask about this and their response was “forgot about that”. They promised to send medication for this, after chasing them up 4 times I finally got to go and collect some of the medication from a volunteer for the charity. They provided the wrong dosage and the wrong amount. This dosage was too high for Taco and wouldn’t have adequately treated the heartworm. After doing more research, it was clear that I needed to take Taco to a vet to get professional help and advice. They informed me of how serious this condition is, it is fatal if left untreated.

I had informed the rescue of this and asked for financial support in paying for her treatment as they should’ve treated her before adopting her out and they should’ve disclosed this information to me before I went ahead with the adoption. They have refused to give any kind of financial support, they won’t even just refund her adoption fee. They have been very defensive about the situation and are not claiming any responsibility whatsoever. This not how a rescue should handle a situation like this, I know other rescues would absolutely pay for treatment. The treatment costs of £2,000 aren’t claimable on her insurance as it’s preexisting since they wrote it in her passport, yet they still failed to inform me of her condition.

I have fallen in love with Taco in such a short time, she isn’t going anywhere! We’re going ahead with treatment and it isn’t going to be cheap or easy for her, we’re looking at minimum of 10 months strict exercise restrictions, no playing with her doggy siblings, no excitement, all of these things risk a blood clot during the treatment process. But hopefully the outcome will be a long healthy life for her. Any support would be appreciated!
