We lost our dear friend, colleague, and mentor, Stanley Allen last week.
After teaching social studies for 23 years at Culver City Middle School, his loss is felt deeply and profoundly at CCMS, in the Culver City community, and beyond. Our hearts go out to his beloved wife, Julie and daughter, Amy, of whom he was incredibly proud.
Mr. Allen had a unique talent- being able to find a meaningful connection with anyone he spoke to. Some of us knew him as “Stan,” or “Stanley,” and for some he was forever the respected “Mr. Allen.” He was a jokester with the commanding presence of a drill sergeant. He was a mentor and masterful teacher, yet continually sought out new learning. He was fiery in his convictions and opinions, but also reserved and an expert listener. To some of us he was like a father figure, and to all of us, a friend. In talking to the staff at CCMS about their many memories of Mr. Allen, one thing that resonated throughout their recollections was that Mr. Allen was an incredibly special person, who also made anyone he talked to feel special, in return.
Mr. Allen dedicated himself completely to his students. He cared profoundly for each of his students and took personal responsibility for helping develop their character and foster their passions. He believed in his students and could find something positive to say about each and every one of them.
The biggest gift that Mr. Allen gave students and staff alike was to make sure we all knew that we were truly loved and appreciated. This was more than just a tagline for Mr. Allen, it was a truth he felt with his whole heart and shared freely with others. One staff member summed it up perfectly when she said, "we all know students need to hear these words, but many of us didn't know how much we needed them, but Mr. Allen always knew," and he gave us the gift of those words every day.
The biggest gift we can give Mr. Allen, in return, is showing how much he was loved and appreciated. Mr. Allen, with his many interests and belief that we are all perennial learners, recently told me that he, "was not finished yet." This was his approach to both teaching and life. There was more to do, more to learn, more to experience. Mr. Allen left this earth with many projects in-progress. This memorial fund is dedicated to helping support Mr. Allen’s family, and finishing his projects.
