Our dear friend Sonny is facing a serious and unexpected health battle, and we are coming together to support him and his family. What began as a respiratory illness with persistent coughing eventually led to severe back pain. At first, it seemed like a muscular injury. During a routine gravel bike ride with his friend Jorge, Sonny hit a small pothole or object. It felt minor at the time, but he heard a cracking sound in his back. There was no immediate pain, but later that day the discomfort became significant. Sonny continued working and spending time with his family despite the pain. But as things worsened, he went to the ER. Scans revealed multiple fractured vertebrae and concerning lesions in his spine. Follow-up evaluations confirmed the devastating news: Sonny has primary lung cancer that has spread to his bones, weakening his vertebrae and making them vulnerable to fracture. He has already undergone a kyphoplasty procedure, which helped relieve some of the pain. He has also completed additional imaging and continues to work closely with his oncology team. At the same time, pneumonia and constant coughing have made his lower back pain even more difficult to manage. After a nine-day ICU stay, Sonny was released home. Getting comfortable has been harder than expected, and for now he is mostly able to rest only on a flat, firm surface — which means he has officially taken over his son’s “stinky” room. Sonny has met with his oncologist and also went to Moffitt Cancer Center for a second opinion. His care plan is starting to come together. Next steps include a brain MRI, a lung biopsy, follow-up on gene analysis from his bone biopsy, and additional appointments with specialists. Treatment is expected to begin soon, likely on a three-week chemotherapy cycle. Right now, the focus is on stabilizing his health, managing pain, clearing the pneumonia, and preparing for the cancer treatment ahead. Anyone who knows Sonny knows his strength, humor, work ethic, and love for his family and friends. Sonny is also a multiple-time Ironman finisher and has raced at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii — a testament to the endurance, discipline, and grit he has carried throughout his life. He is the kind of person who pushes through hard things, shows up for others, and never quits. Now, as Sonny faces the hardest race of his life, it is our turn to show up for him. Funds raised will help support Sonny and his family with medical expenses, treatment-related costs, travel to appointments, time away from work, household needs, and anything else required as he begins this fight. Every donation, share, prayer, message, and act of support matters. No amount is too small. Thank you for standing with Sonny and his family during this incredibly difficult time.
