The Sheep Sanctuary Inc. was founded in 2004, became state certified in 2006 and gained 501c3 status in 2007.

The original mission of The Sheep Sanctuary was to exclusively provide eldercare and hospice care for Sheep. As Goats in need started to show up, we expanded to become New Mexico‘s only vegan farm animal sanctuary specializing in the care of ruminants (especially Sheep and Goats). We provide sanctuary for the elderly, infirm, orphaned, unwanted, discarded or those headed for slaughter. In the last decade, other species needing rescue (Turkeys, Peacocks and Horses), became residents as well. Our daily activities include housing, feeding, watering, medical treatment and hospice care for between 60 and 80 animals… and always striving to educate others about the sentience of non-human animals.”

We have been having lots of new arrivals at the sanctuary including 2 intact rams, 4 turkeys, a pregnant ewe and a new lamb. This means we will have additional feed and structure building costs. As of last week, the price of 2 string alfalfa bales in Santa Fe has gone up to $19.99 per bale. Straw is now $10.99 per bale as well. We are currently feeding 7 alfalfa bales and using 1 straw bale per day. With the new arrivals and the prices of alfalfa going up considerably this year, we are spending over $6,000 per month on alfalfa alone. Also, the shelters under construction have been in the works and staff has been busily preparing for current and new arrivals. The adult rams and new ram-lamb will require surgical neutering. Having their and other surgeries on-site, as well as other medical care will easily cost $1,000+. The sanctuary is working to accommodate an increasing need for individuals who can’t support and house their sheep and lambs. We are working to provide fulfilling and long life expectancies for our beloved animals and anything helps.
