Help Support Ryan Murphy in his Fight Against Cancer

On July 15th, 2025, at just 42 years old, Ryan Murphy was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic melanoma — with cancer present in his lungs, kidneys, and pelvis.

Ryan’s journey began in January, when he started experiencing unexplained hip pain. At first, doctors believed it stemmed from a childhood hip surgery. He tried physical therapy, but the pain persisted. In March Ryan began coughing up blood. Multiple rounds of antibiotics, steroids, and inhalers brought no relief. In May, after returning to the orthopedic doctor, a scan revealed a mass on his pelvis. A follow-up chest scan ordered by his primary care physician showed multiple nodules in both lungs. Given Ryan’s history with Stage 2A melanoma—successfully removed with clear margins in 2017—his doctor immediately suspected the cancer had returned.

After six grueling weeks of testing and unrelenting pain, the diagnosis was confirmed: Ryan has metastatic melanoma affecting multiple areas of his body. On July 28th, he began immunotherapy treatment at the University of Chicago. The next day, he underwent a procedure to help reduce the severe bleeding from his lungs. He continues to battle daily debilitating pain caused by the large tumor in his pelvis.

This diagnosis came just one year after what was supposed to be a joyful new chapter for Ryan and his wife, Sarah. The couple was married on June 1st, 2024, in a backyard ceremony, just weeks after the heartbreak of losing their beloved 10-year-old dog, Ranger. At the time of Ryan’s diagnosis, they were undergoing IVF, holding onto their dream of starting a family. That dream is now on pause as they focus all their energy on getting Ryan well.
