Hi, my name is Kat, and I’m a close friend of Rosie and her family.
I never imagined I’d be writing something like this, but when your friend’s child is diagnosed with leukaemia, you don’t hesitate, you do whatever you can to help.
Elvie is Rosie’s youngest daughter. She’s 13 years old. She’s the baby of the family bright, funny, kind, and full of life, with a love for dinosaurs and a smile that still somehow shines through hospital days. She should be worrying about school, friends, and growing up, not hospital rooms, invasive treatments, and fighting a disease no child should ever face.
Elvie’s treatment plan spans approximately 2.5 years, and she has been classified as very high risk. This isn’t a short battle or a brief disruption to life, it is a long, exhausting road ahead, filled with uncertainty, intense treatment, and constant vigilance.
Since Elvie’s diagnosis, the Luik family’s world has been completely turned upside down. Life now revolves around hospitals, appointments, waiting rooms, and long, relentless days of fear and exhaustion. Rosie has had to stop working entirely so she can be by Elvie’s side throughout treatment, while still trying to keep life steady and emotionally safe for her three older children.
The reality is that they are doing it incredibly tough. (We need your help- please)
As a friend, watching this unfold has been heartbreaking. The emotional toll is enormous, but so is the financial strain. Bills don’t stop. Rent, food, fuel, and basic living costs continue, even as income disappears. The constant stress of how they will survive financially sits alongside the terror no parent should ever have to carry, fearing for their child’s life.
While Australia’s healthcare system provides essential medical care, there are still countless costs families quietly absorb lost income, ongoing travel to and from hospital, fuel, medications, food, and the everyday expenses that simply don’t pause during long-term cancer treatment.
This fundraiser exists because the Luik family is under immense and sustained pressure, and they need help — not just for a moment, but for the long road ahead. They deserve the chance to focus on supporting Elvie through this fight without the added burden of wondering how they’ll keep a roof over their heads or food on the table.
If you’re reading this from anywhere in the world, please know that your support matters deeply. Whether through a donation or by sharing this fundraiser, every act of kindness helps lighten the weight this family is carrying.
Thank you for standing with Elvie. Thank you for holding this family in your hearts. And thank you for reminding them that they are not alone in this long, difficult fight.
Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. If you’re able to share this fundraiser or leave a message of love or encouragement for Elvie, it would mean more than words can say to the family x
