Early Saturday morning (around 6:30 a.m.), I found Ronan had become paralyzed overnight. This time it affected all four of his legs—basically neck down. We rushed him to the emergency vet immediately, where he was admitted and underwent an MRI.
Thankfully, he does not need surgery this time. The MRI showed a severe bruise on his spine rather than a rupture. That said, recovery is expected to be harder than the first time, and it will require intensive physical therapy, specialized rehab support, and new medical supplies to keep him safe and comfortable.
Ronan came home yesterday afternoon, which I’m incredibly grateful for. I work from home, so I’m able to care for him throughout the day in between writing and work—but it’s still a full-time emotional and physical commitment, and one I’m taking very seriously.
We knew from the first injury that there was a high risk of re-injury, even with extreme care. Ronan is carried up and down every step, always supported—but he’s still a dog who sometimes gets the zoomies, and that sudden movement is likely what caused this setback. We do everything we can, but some of this is simply the reality of spinal injuries.
The emergency vet care totaled $6,698, and I’ve already spent $346 on rehab supplies and medical necessities. His physical therapy is essential and ongoing, starting at $465 for the initial visit, with additional sessions ahead. I also need to purchase more recovery and mobility supplies as we go.
I don’t have $7,000+ sitting around, and while I’m doing everything I can to keep up, the costs add up quickly. I’ve created an Amazon wishlist with prioritized items for Ronan’s recovery—everything is marked by urgency, and any extra funds raised here will go directly toward his physical therapy and continued care:
Ronan is my shadow, my constant companion, and my writing buddy. He’s been by my side through every chapter of my life, and taking care of him now is the only thing that matters to me.
