Our feline princess Twix of 12 years had been losing weight over the past two months (January 2026).

She became very quiet last of couple weeks, leading us to take her to the hospital to run some tests. Preliminary X-ray scans showed a tumor around 6 cm by 6 cm in her intestine area with some fluid surrounding it. This resulted in a referral to the Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital for an ultrasound.

On March 4, 2026, under a guided ultrasound, the tumor was imaged together with fine needle sampling (to sample the tumor). Doctors found some liquid around her digestive tract, and took a sample for testing. We returned home after the test and noticed that Twix had completely stopped eating. She barely moved, and showed no interest in food.

The next day, we received a call from the hospital, informing us that the results of the fluid sample discovered that there was bacterial infection, suggesting that the tumor had ruptured. As a result, doctors suggested immediate surgery and so we rushed her into the hospital on March 5, 2026.

Her surgery took around 3-4 hours and was a great success. She is currently in the ICU for a few days. The surgery involved removing the tumor, any affected lymph nodes, and fusing her small and large intestine (the area where the tumor was).

We're grateful for the successful surgery but it has now left us with a hefty bill (total cost is around CAD 10K). We still do not know if the tumor is malignant (chemo down the line) or benign which could further increase our costs for treatment.
