Help support Paramedic Kyle Miller

Kyle Miller was a Paramedic for Halton Region for only five short months, before learning that a recurrence of his brain cancer will likely strip him of the title he worked so hard for.

He was originally diagnosed in 2017 after a series of seizures led to him being taken to the ER. He was sedated for combativeness and then struggled with pneumonia, collapsed lungs, and sepsis in the ICU at Brampton Civic Hospital. A cancerous tumor, known as an Anaplastic Astrocytoma, was removed at Trillium Hospital with a 90% resection and Kyle was eventually referred for further treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital. Forced to balance chemotherapy and radiation, multiple trips between home and hospital, Kyle found some inspiration for his future by thinking about the past.

Kyle was a dedicated Medical Venturer and Rover through Scouts Canada. Reflecting on his experience in this group, and with some guidance from his leadership, he decided to set the wheels into motion. He was accepted to Fleming College in the Paramedic Program and despite taking a year off due to Covid, graduated in good standing and was offered positions as a Primary Care Paramedic from several GTA services.

Feeling like his life was on the up and up, Kyle was settling in with Halton Paramedic Services, and enjoying every bit of being “on the road”. It was then, after a long shift, Kyle found himself in familiar territory. He had a focal seizure while driving which lead to a minor motor vehicle collision. After returning home with a plan to follow up with his neurologist, he had a full body seizure. This left him in an unpleasantly familiar situation once again with his driver's license being revoked. Kyle realized that without being eligible for the proper driver's license, his career as a Paramedic would no longer exist.

Kyle learned that the cancer had once again returned, expanding from the original site it was resected from. He suffered through 70+ focal seizures per day while awaiting another brain surgery. Despite a successful surgery and now being seizure-free for some time, Kyle is unable to work. He is ineligible for many of the financial supports granted to those who are finished probation and onto full time status.

After hearing of his frustrations with navigating EI and disability benefits, we set up this fund in hopes of enlisting the support of his friends, family, and coworkers. Initiated by OPSEU Local 207, the Paramedics of Halton Region, we ask with gratitude that if you are able to please consider donating for Kyle Miller and a brighter future.
