Help Support Our Sweet Sarah

As many of you know, our precious daughter, Sarah, was diagnosed with breast cancer this past April. She found a lump in her left breast as she was doing a self-breast exam. After numerous ultrasounds, biopsies, mammograms and a MRI, a biopsy determined she had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. Sarah also had “suspicious” spots in her right breast, but they were too small to biopsy at that time. She was asked to return in six months to have more biopsies. After much consideration, Sarah felt confident that a double mastectomy would be the right decision for her.

Sarah had a double mastectomy on July 1. It went very well and she has recovered beautifully. The cancer did not spread to her lymph nodes, which is great news!

Sarah’s cancer is estrogen and progesterone receptor-positive, which means her cancer “lives” off these hormones. In order for her to make the best recovery possible, she’ll need to take a hormone blocker drug called, Tamoxifen. She’ll be on this drug anywhere from 2-10 years, it just depends on how well her body responds to it. A fertility specialist suggested that Sarah undergo an egg retrieval procedure before she begins Tamoxifen. Sarah would love to have a baby someday, whether it be her own or through adoption. She wants to ensure that the option to have her own child one day isn’t taken away by cancer treatments.

Sarah is currently preparing her body for egg retrieval. Her eggs will then be frozen. The process is expensive and not covered by insurance. Many friends, family and colleagues have asked how they can support our amazing daughter. She is very lucky to have so many people who love and care for her.
