For those of you do not know Luca, he is a son, brother, grandson, great grandson, great great grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. He is also one of the kindest, sweetest, toughest, and most loving 12-year-olds. Most importantly, he is a superhero to so many.
Luca was diagnosed with ALL (a form of leukemia) when he was just 9 years old. He fought a tough battle and overcame his illness. He rang his therapy victory bell on October 21, 2020...his 12th birthday. Unfortunately, less than 6 weeks later, in December 2020, our family learned that Luca’s cancer had returned, this time as AML (another type of leukemia). He had a very big battle ahead of him. Luca was admitted just before the new year for treatment, and began his battle once again. Luca underwent strenuous chemotherapy in preparation for a stem-cell transplant. In March 2021, Luca received the incredible gift of unconditional love, in the form of his dad Jordan’s bone marrow. The transplant went well, but as Luca’s body fought to create new healthy cells with the help of dads new cells, his body started to weaken and his organs started to fail one by one. When he pulled through some very tough nights, Luca became known to many as a miracle. His transplant was a success and we watched Luca graduate from ICU back to the oncology unit, and eventually, home! We celebrated day +100 only a few short weeks ago, which is a milestone day after transplant where the risk of rejection declines significantly. Unfortunately, by day +120, Luca’s AML relapsed and we were told because of how aggressive AML is, coupled with how quickly he relapsed after transplant, that there are no further treatment options for Luca. He is at home enjoying being a kid for the short time he has left with us. Our family is incredibly heartbroken, it has been an incredible journey, and we wish love was enough to cure him, because Luca is loved by an entire world, most especially by his family.
This page is set up to help Jordan & Gabriella as they prepare for an incredibly hard part of this journey, and to help with lost income. Jordan has had to take time off of his job to be with Luca during his transplant, and had only been back to work a few weeks before Luca relapsed. We’re not sure at this time that he will qualify for a paid short-term leave. Gabriella has been home as Luca’s caregiver throughout his entire journey, so they are a one income family who is going to need some support so they can both be with Luca for his final days. Any donations are welcome and accepted with love and gratitude from Luca’s family. Thank you all for your continued love and support, it means the world to Luca and our families.
