As many of you know, my parents have a home in Hawley, Massachusetts, a place that has become a cherished retreat for our family. It’s peaceful, welcoming, and the kind of place where neighbors truly look out for one another.
Last week, that sense of community took on a very personal meaning when our neighbors, Tracy & Dan Atkins experienced every parent’s nightmare. Their sweet and spirited 12-year-old daughter was involved in a bicycle accident.
She suffered serious injuries and multiple facial traumas. She will need a series of facial and oral procedures, visits to specialists, and multiple follow-up appointments to fully heal. While she’s already received initial treatment, this is only the beginning.
This young woman isn’t just a neighbor; she’s a truly beloved part of our community. She regularly walks dogs for multiple families on our street, including ours, and is always happy to lend a hand. She's kind, responsible, and full of life, the kind of young person who brings light and joy wherever she goes. Especially, to our tight knit Franklin County community.
We’re starting this GoFundMe to help ease the financial burden on this wonderful family to assist with the extensive dental costs, time lost from work, travel to appointments, and, most importantly, to ensure they can access the very best care for their daughter. As the road ahead is overwhelming, with the right support, she’s expected to make a full recovery and return to the adventurous, carefree life every seventh grader deserves.
If you’re able to give, no matter the amount, it will mean so much to all of us who care about this family. It’s in moments like these that we’re called to show the best of who we are, to come together as a community, to be good neighbors, and to lift one another up with love and compassion. If you’re not in a position to donate, please consider sharing this page to help us spread the word.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and compassion.
With gratitude,
Kathryn, Ruth, and Duncan Gillan
