Help Oskar Walk Again
On the 6th March, we received the devastating news that Oskar had an accident which was to change his life. He fell from a 19-foot old wooden balcony which was presumed to be safe. He broke his spine in two places and was immediately paralysed due to the damage of his spinal cord. He was airlifted to the children’s Hospital in Krakow and immediately upon arrival he underwent extensive surgery. The wonderful surgical team had to remove vertebrae and secure the spine with titanium plates and screws. As a result of this surgery he has regained mobility to the upper half of his body. Due to severity of this surgery the doctors placed Oskar into an induced coma for a period of almost two weeks.
On 10th March, the surgeons performed a second lengthy operation to remove more vertebrae and also to secure the cervical spine with additional titanium. It was at this stage that Oskar’s induced coma was reversed, he regained consciousness on the 17th March. Unfortunately, we learnt that though he was motor mobility in the upper half of his body, he is incontinent and is paralysed with a loss of sensation from the waist down.
Oskar has now been transferred to the Rehabilitative Hospital in Radiszow, about an hour’s drive from home. We expect that Oskar will be here for a long time as he undergoes therapy to help him reverse the neurological damage and mental anguish that he will doubtless face in the months and years ahead. He will also learn skills as to how to live as independently as possible upon his return home. Due to the Coronavirus situation, I (Ron) am living with Oskar in his room and paying specific attention to his spirit. I am glad to say that at this early stage he is demonstrating unbelievable courage, determination and above all, good humour. We both look forward to the bi-weekly food “care-package” that my wife Małgorzata lovingly prepares for us.
Oskar is by nature a happy, caring and bright 16-year-old, with loving siblings including his twin sister Oriana. He had just started prepping for his A-levels in September, opting to major in Maths and Physics. He is a gregarious fellow with lots of friends and with a passion for all sorts of outdoor sports including Snowboarding and Boxing. He also loves music, computer games and generally being a fun-loving teenager hanging out with friends etc.
And now the difficult part.
Oskar is facing a long road to recovery through rehabilitation. We need to extensively adapt our home, adding wheelchair ramps and rearranging the floorplan. The extensive medical and rehabilitative costs, the construction costs along with providing wheelchair and wheelchair accessible transportation is going to require a large sum of money. Our goal is to reduce frustrating inconveniences thus allowing Oskar to focus on his rehabilitation and education. We want to be in a financial situation to get help from global experts in the neurological field who may be able to help Oskar. In short, we want to ensure that as loving parents we do everything we can to give Oskar all the support we possibly can. To accomplish this, we desperately need the financial support of all our loving friends and compassionate strangers.
❤︎ Thank you,
Ron and Małgorzata
