Natalie turned 3 on October 3rd this year, and instead of being able to enjoy a very special time in her life, her 'severe ear infection symptoms' she was being treated for had gotten worse. She was started to lose her balance, and vomit more frequently. She had finished 2 courses of antibiotics, and her condition had not improved. Natalie could no longer sit up on her own, so having a very strong parental instinct Natalie's father Nathan made the decision to take Natalie to the nearest hospital which was an hour away in La Loche. He advocated for his daughters health, that this was not just an ear infection and she needed help from healthcare professionals equipped to handle whatever this was that was causing these kinds of symptoms. The next morning he and Natalie were flying to Prince Albert for further care. Once in Prince Albert, they performed a CAT scan on Natalie and found that she had a mass in her brain, and was suffering from hydrocephalus. Nathan and Natalie were immediately flown to JPCH in Saskatoon for an MRI and to perform emergency surgery to drain the fluid build up in Natalie's brain. The MRI revealed that Natalie has a tumor in a very important area of her brain that controls her emotions, her ability to speak and walk, her eyesight and hearing, and her cognitive development. The MRI also revealed that there was a cyst right above the tumor. This cyst was restricting the flow of spinal fluid in her brain and causing it to accumulate and build up. The tube that was put into her brain was not draining properly and would not unless they went in and punctured the cyst. They also needed a biopsy of the tumor to identify what kind of tumor it is. Natalie has undergone 2 brain surgeries less then 2 weeks apart. Thanks to the amazing nurses, doctors and staff available at Jim Pattissons Children Hospital, the second surgery to pop the cyst and collect a biopsy has been successful, and as of right now she no longer needs the tube in her brain to drain the fluid. The biopsy results have come back and it was found that the tumor is a non aggressive form of cancer, but because of the location of the tumor surgery is not an option. There is , however, a 6 week radiation treatment available that could shrink the size of the tumor but this treatment is only available in Chicago, Illinois.
So we are reaching out to anyone taking the time to read this and listen to Natalie's story for help to support her, her parents and grandmother's trip from Saskatchewan, Canada to Chicago, United States. If you can't donate, then you can help us by sharing Natalie's story with your family and friends ! Thank you all so much !
