Help support my study abroad to Taiwan

My name is Geoffrey Allen and I am a junior majoring in Chinese at the College of Wooster. I aspire to travel to Taiwan to fulfill my graduation requirements because I consider an immersion language program crucial to fully grasp the material I have learned over the past three years. But until now, due to multiple obstacles surrounding Covid-19 and travel, I have been unable to complete a study abroad experience.

 

With your support, I will be able to enroll in the CET Taiwan internship summer program where I would complete the necessary credits to fulfill my Chinese study major requirements. I would also be able to complete data collection for my senior capstone project. The tuition for the program is $9,000.

 

Paying for the Taiwan study abroad program might not have been a problem if my family and I hadn't become financially vulnerable due to the recent and sudden death of my grandmother. My single mother has had to cover the exorbitant funeral costs associated with my grandmother’s passing in New Jersey and burial in St. Lucia. For this reason my mother can no longer financially support my aspirations to go abroad.

Support from the larger community would allow me to continue my academic pursuits this summer and stay on track to graduate as a Chinese major in Spring 2023. I don’t think study abroad should be a privilege reserved only for those who can afford it. With your support, I am committed to using this experience to advance my Chinese studies and share what I learn with others in my community!


Additional note: My appeals to my college financial aid office have failed to provide any monetary assistance despite the fact that the CET Taiwan program is promoted by the study abroad department.
