In November of 2024, my sister, a dedicated single mom, was assaulted by a special needs student in her classroom, resulting in a number of injuries, with the most severe being a concussion that led to her hospitalization and a diagnosis of post-concussive syndrome. Since then, she has been on medical leave from teaching, undergoing various treatments and therapies under the care of neurologists, including occupational, physical, visual, and speech therapy.

In April of 2025, she was further diagnosed with visual midline shift syndrome convergence insufficiency, requiring prism glasses and vision therapy. Following this, in April and May, she had back-to-back hospitalizations for unrelated medical issues, including internal bleeding that required a medical procedure and the placement of a feeding tube due to stomach / digestion problems.

Most recently, on July 21st, she was rushed to the ER and diagnosed with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), resulting in a hospital stay and subsequent transport to a subacute rehab facility and back to the hospital due to worsening conditions. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, she was discharged home due to the rehab facility's inability to provide proper care and is awaiting a possible transfer to a different rehab facility.

On top of her health challenges, my sister, a single mom, just received notice that her health care coverage is being canceled at the end of the month, and she has exhausted all of her resources to cover medical and household expenses. With her workers' comp benefits ending soon and ongoing legal battles for rightful coverage, obtaining coverage will likely be challenging, leaving her in a dire financial situation.
