As many of you know, our family recently suffered the heartbreaking loss of my dad, Tom. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, and friend — someone who always put everyone else before himself. Losing him so unexpectedly has left a hole in our family that we’re still struggling to understand, and now my mom is facing overwhelming financial pressures on top of her grief.

My parents shared everything, including their finances. With my dad gone, my mom is now left with very little in their account, ongoing monthly bills, and the immediate cost of funeral expenses. She is trying her best to navigate this new reality while grieving the man she spent her life with. No one should have to worry about money during a time like this — but right now, she is.

On top of everything, Social Security is currently withholding my dad’s monthly benefit, which was their only stable source of income (outside of my dad's part-time job). Because of his passing, the payment was pulled back immediately, leaving my mom with no financial cushion at all. While we’re working with Social Security to understand the next steps, the process can take weeks — time she simply doesn’t have when bills and funeral costs are due now.

My dad was the kind of person who showed up for everyone — he cracked jokes, gave the best hugs, and loved his family fiercely. He was an incredible grandpa to Mikey and Makenna, helped my mom babysit, and was always a steady, comforting presence. We want to honor him by ensuring my mom has the support she needs to get through the hardest chapter of her life.
