Hi, my name is Kelly Sisson-Hanks, and I’m reaching out with a humble heart to ask for your support during a difficult time for my family. We are currently navigating two major medical challenges—one affecting my husband, Marcus Hanks, and the other my mother, Mary Zeffer. Both are facing serious health concerns, and the financial burden has become overwhelming.
Marcus’s Story
Over the past year, Marcus has struggled with a condition that makes swallowing painful and dangerous. He has experienced constant vomiting, choking, and fear around eating—sometimes going without food altogether. After many tests and uncertainty, he was finally diagnosed with an esophageal stricture. Thankfully, it wasn’t cancer, but this is now a chronic condition that will require ongoing monitoring and care.
His recent procedure and the necessary follow-up testing have left us with out-of-pocket medical expenses totaling $3,500, even after insurance. Marcus is a former teacher of 13 years who stepped away from the classroom due to a toxic environment, but he’s never stopped giving. Every year, he donates to help children in need—providing essentials like food, warm clothes, and supplies.
Mary’s Story
My mother Mary was recently removed from Medicaid and is now facing a necessary surgery to remove pre-cancerous growths in her breasts. While they are not cancerous now, doctors have warned that this could change if left untreated. Her limited private insurance will not fully cover the procedure, leaving us with $5,000 in expected costs.
Mary raised me practically on her own while managing an incredibly difficult marriage. She sacrificed so much to ensure I had what I needed. Now, after finally finding happiness in her marriage with my dad, she deserves peace—not fear over medical bills.
Our Goal: $10,000
We are aiming to raise $10,000 to cover:
Marcus’s medical procedure and ongoing care
Mary’s breast surgery and recovery
Lost income during their recovery periods
Relieving the emotional and financial strain this year has brought
This has been one of the hardest years for us emotionally and financially. But we remain hopeful—and incredibly grateful for every person who takes a moment to care. If you’re able to donate, share, or simply send encouragement, it would mean the world.
Thank you for standing with us.
With love,
Kelly Sisson-Hanks
