Within the past year, our family received heartbreaking news: my grandpa (Mike Ryan) was diagnosed with ALS—also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. We are here facing a disease that has no cure and an average life expectancy of only three years. ALS slowly takes away your ability to move, speak, eat, and eventually breathe—while your mind stays completely alert. It’s one of the cruelest diseases imaginable.
My grandpa is the most loving and hardworking man I know. Throughout his life he always made sure everyone knew how much he loved them.
He has always had a passion for his family, friends, for music (especially Dave Matthews), for sports, for his work, and for life itself. But over the last year, we’ve watched as this disease has slowly taken pieces of him. First, the use of his hands, his feet, and his balance. Now, the muscle deterioration, pain, and weakness continue to progress.
With ALS advancing, my grandpa can no longer run his beloved restaurant, leaving him uninsured and relying on Medicaid. While Medicaid helps, it doesn’t cover many of the specialized needs ALS brings—equipment, therapies, home modifications, and care that will give him comfort and dignity in the time he has left with us.
This is why we’re asking for help. Every donation, big or small, will go directly toward making sure my grandpa has what he needs during this devastating journey. Your generosity will help ease his physical struggles and give our family peace of mind as we focus on loving him through this time.
We are deeply grateful for your prayers, support, and kindness. Thank you for helping us give my grandpa the care he deserves.
