What was meant to be a fun February vacation with my children quickly turned into a nightmare. Less than 24 hours after arriving in Florida, I broke my leg while riding an e-bike with my son, Jordan. I was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, and after x-rays, I was transferred to another hospital for emergency surgery due to compartment syndrome. I had a double fasciotomy to relieve the pressure due to swelling and trauma and was also placed in an external fixation to hold the tibia bone in place while waiting for swelling to reduce. I now face 2-3 more surgeries to repair the bone and close the fasciotomy sites.
This unexpected tragedy has left my children devastated. Thankfully, my mother and father, who live in Florida, were both able to take some time off from their own jobs and spend the week with my babies. They are also flying my children home to their mother on Sunday and coming back Monday to continue to care for me with the first part of my recovery.
Recovery doesn't look good. I will be out of work for a minimum of three months. As a self-employed contractor, I do not qualify for unemployment benefits or paid medical leave. With two children to support and a home to maintain, this situation has placed an immense financial strain on me.
I am incredibly grateful for the people in my life who have been so supportive and accommodating thus far. Your kindness and generosity mean everything to me. As humbling as it is, I find myself in a position where I must ask for help. Any support—whether financial assistance, resources, or simply sharing my story—would make a world of difference for me and my children as we navigate this challenging time.
