I am Shelby Scharbach and I am helping my amazing nephew and niece, Justin and Rhyan, to organize this fundraiser for their Dad, Devin Esquibel, my Brother-in-Law. They are my world and we would love your support.
================================================================
Hello everyone - my name is Justin. My sister Rhyan and I are launching a fundraiser to help our Dad, Devin. He is the most amazing father, husband, brother, uncle and friend who is battling a serious, life-threatening form of cancer. You hope this won't happen to anyone, especially your beloved parent.
The struggle started in early January of 2023. After a few months of feeling tired and constantly coughing, our Dad was told by doctors on March 15th - his 51st birthday - that something was off with his blood cells. Before our Dad could make it to his scheduled appointment on March 22nd with a hematologist, he was admitted to the ER. After many hours and countless appointments and tests with the amazing teams of doctors at the Mayo Hospital and Honor Health, our Dad was diagnosed with myelodysplastic myeloproliferative overlap, a rare and aggressive bone marrow cancer. Basically, his bone marrow is no longer working. The only option for our Dad is a bone marrow/stem cell transplant.
Since our family has embarked on this challenging battle, our Dad has endured 18 blood transfusions, 4 bone marrow biopsies, 4 rounds of chemotherapy and countless blood draws and doctor’s appointments. All the while, 45 pounds lighter and with new smaller Cardinals gear, our Dad is keeping up a positive spirit and throwing in some “Dad Jokes” for everyone supporting him. With no compatible bone marrow donors in the bone marrow registry for our Dad, the family was all overjoyed when I got the call that I was an ideal match. With great pride, I am the donor for our Dad. My stem cells were retrieved on June 19, 2023.
Due to his illness and compromised immune system from all the treatments our Dad has received thus far, he has not been able to work since March 2023. He has worked tirelessly at American Airlines for 21 years to support my Mom, Sister, and myself. The process for the stem cell transplant will require a 30-day hospital stay at Mayo Clinic, 100 days of isolation/quarantine following the bone marrow transplant and he can not return to work until a year after the transplant- possibly August 2024. Our goal is the current chemo our Dad is doing will allow him to be admitted before the end of August for his transplant.
The emotional support, prayers and positive thoughts that many of you have already given has been the most encouraging thing that our Dad can receive during this time as he takes on the biggest fight of his life.
Not being able to work has caused an emotional and financial burden for our Dad and our family as you can imagine. The unexpected costs are surprising - they include, but are not limited to loss of income, unexpected medical and pharmaceutical costs, travel costs to and from Mayo multiple times a week, additional necessary medical equipment necessary for his hospital stay, quarantine and aftercare. Any financial help is appreciated during this difficult time.
Any donated funds will go to support the loss of wages and additional expenses incurred while our Dad recovers from his bone marrow/stem cell transplant. We are 100% confident my Dad will come through this and live a happy and healthy life. We so appreciate everyone's support and keeping us in your thoughts.
I want to assure you that any surplus funds raised will be wholeheartedly donated to institutions devoted to the research and treatment of all bone marrow and blood cancers.
Thank you for your ongoing love and support for my Dad Devin and all his loved ones.
Justin and Rhyan Scharbach
xoxo
