In the fall of 2022, I began experiencing severe symptoms like itching, burning, and inflammation on my scalp. Unfortunately , I encountered my greatest fear in spring 2023, when my hair began falling out in small clumps. After seeing a dermatologist, I was formally diagnosed with CCCA (Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia), a type of alopecia that almost exclusively affects Afro-Caribbean and Black women causing follicle death that prevents hair regrowth. Unfortunately, hair transplants aren’t an option for me due to my specific alopecia diagnosis.

Thankfully, I have found a solutions for my hair loss through scalp micropigmentation, a procedure that will give a permanent illusion of hair follicles and help me feel more confident while battling this traumatic diagnosis. Unfortunately, insurance doesn’t cover this procedure (insurance only covers injections and medication for inflammation) as it is considered cosmetic, even though alopecia is a medically diagnosed condition.
