My name is Juweyria based in the UK, and I work on Advocacy for Ogaden Peoples Rights Organisation.
Human Rights Watch’s (HRW) released a report on Jail Ogaden on 5th July 2018. The report is titled ‘We are like the Dead: Torture and other Human Rights Abuses in Jail Ogaden’ which describes a horrific pattern of abuse, torture and rape in one of Ethiopia’s most notorious prisons. Thousands of prisoners are held without access to a lawyer, family or medical care and without being charged of a single crime. Muxumed Anni has spoken of his experiences in prison describing an unimaginable pattern of abuse, torture and neglect. Many have died in prison as a result, while many, including those transported to Bayaxow have contracted TB.
The case of Muxumed Anni is a tragic example of the horrors faced by Jail Ogaden detainees. In February 2014, he was captured by the Somali military in a town called Guri Ceel in Somalia and was handed over to Ethiopian and Liyu Police forces. After being imprisoned in the notorious Jail Ogaden in Jigjiga for 4 years, in February 2018 he was told that he was going to be freed along with 800 other prisoners. During his time in Jail Ogaden, he was tortured, humiliated, denied food and water, access to medical care and kept in solitary confinement. Instead of being set free, Abdi Iley transported him to Bayaxow; a slave labour site where he was forced to carryout intensive labour such as difficult construction work under terrible conditions whilst injured from torture in Jail Ogaden. He continued to be punished and imprisoned in Bayaxow alongside Faarax Siyaad Axmed, Axmed Cabdullahi Muxumed, Carab Soocane Dhulbahante, Khadar Shugri Muuse and Mukhtar Maxamuud Cabdullahi who have since escaped and shared the horrors which they encountered noth in Jail Ogaden and in Bayaxow.
Former Jail Ogaden prisoners have experienced an unimaginable amount of pain and suffering; both physical and psychological, and they needs your support to alleviate some of this pain by seeking medical support for their multiple injuries. Some prisoners have been made disabled from torture, and all of them have lost everything. We ask you all to contribute towards supporting and uplifting former-prisoners so that they can seek medical help and begin to build their lives again.
The funds raised will be sent directly to the victims. I am in direct communication with the key victims listed above, I am also in touch with their family members should I face any difficulty reaching them. The funds will be used to fund medical and rehabilitation costs, and will be sent to the beneficiaries directly via KAAH Money transfer.
