Help Support Mountain Marble & Granite Families Post Helene

Mountain Marble has been a part of WNC, Asheville for over 30 years.

My father, Hank Strauss, started Mountain Marble & Granite Inc. when we first moved to Asheville, starting one of the first stone fabrication shops in the area. Today, there are plenty of fabricators; some of our past employees have even gone on to start their own shops, but it is Mountain Marble that has the outstanding reputation that was established by my father & his team of lifelong dedicated craftsmen.

Hurricane Helene brought upon Mountain Marble a nearly-fatal blow. We have lost both our buildings; our office building is now nationally known as the white-roofed building split down the center in front of a fully occupied apartment building as it's being swept downriver, immediately after having crashed into our stone fabrication shop. Everything else that was not damaged by the destructive debris—cars, houses, tanks, trucks—was submerged under 12 feet of water & 2 feet of mud. In other words, everything was damaged or destroyed.

We felt lucky that all the Mountain Marble family crew & their loved ones were safe. Quickly realizing how inevitably, our long-standing tight-knit family had just been torn apart as well by the flood. How could I continue to feed all the big & little mouths I’m responsible for if Mountain Marble cannot operate?

So here we are, going into the holidays with my men unemployed. The last few shoveling mud, cleaning slabs in the cold, moving slabs in the rain, doing incredible feats of finding order out of chaos & helping Mountain Marble navigate long enough to conclude with as much dignity as can be gathered under these awful circumstances.

These dedicated men have given a large part of their working lives to Mountain Marble and now, through no fault of their own, find themselves unemployed and needing a way to get by. These are hardworking, caring achievers whose work/life plans have been disrupted overnight, many of them being fathers, sole providers for their families, going into the holidays.
