Help Support Momodoulamin Jabbi’s Family in Gambia:
A Young Man’s Fight for a Better Future
Hello everyone,
I’m reaching out today to share the story of a young man in Western Gambia who is desperately in need of support. His name is Momodoulamin Jabbi, or Momo for short. He’s 27 years old, and for the past two years, he’s been solely responsible for caring for his two younger sisters, who are just 9 and 11 years old. Tragically, both of their parents passed away, and Momo stepped up as their sole provider.
Momo lives in extreme poverty, and every day is a struggle for survival. Without a basic education (he didn’t finish primary school), his job prospects are limited to manual labor—concrete and brick work, or pulling weeds—which, as you can imagine, are inconsistent and underpaid. On a good day, Momo earns just 600 GMD (about $6 USD) for a full day’s worth of manual labor, which is not enough to cover the basic needs of himself and his sisters.
Momo and his sisters were in a unhealthy relationship with a landlord, they have managed to break that bond. However, now they are homeless, and have taken shelter in a ramshackle home that is busted and broken without any doors or windows, but at the very least provides a roof and walls. There is no guarantee that this shelter will last, that somewhere out there there isn't an owner of this abandoned home.
The Urgency of the Situation
Without proper support, Momo and his sisters are on the verge of homelessness and starvation. When Hurricane Helene began, we found each other, and I began supporting him financially. I was able to help him with many things, but it was unsustainable. The situation has become even more dire since I have been no longer able to support them financially after a few months of help. The emotional and physical strain of caring for two young girls while barely surviving is overwhelming, and Momo has nowhere to turn.
Additionally, Momo has a cyst on his face that is growing worse. While I had been paying for his medical treatment, the cyst ultimately needs to be excised, something that neither he nor I can afford.
Our Goal: Empowering Momo to Become Financially Independent
The goal of this campaign is to raise between $1,750 and $5,555 to help Momo and his sisters move towards a life of financial stability. With this funding, we can help provide Momo with the opportunity to work for himself, build his future, and provide for his sisters without relying on handouts.
One of his dreams is to be able to send his sisters to school.
Below are the different ways we could use the funds to help him:
* $1,750 to $2,430: This amount would allow Momo to buy a donkey cart or a Chinese motorcycle, both of which are common and reliable ways to earn a living in Gambia. With this, Momo would be able to offer transport services and make a living, increasing his income and providing stability for his family.
* $5,000: This would give Momo the chance to purchase and register a proper vehicle, allowing him to start a taxi business. A vehicle would offer him the opportunity to earn a steady income, allowing him to pay for rent, food, medical expenses, and other necessities.
* $5,555: At this level, we could fund a trip for Momo with a local organization that offers a path for him to go to Canada and seek better-paying work, far beyond what is available in Gambia.
The primary goal of this fundraiser is to put Momo in a place where he is able to grab a hold of his financial reality, and not be dragged by the reins of suppressive systems. If I am able even to just get him a donkey cart, both of us would be blessed.
I promised Momo that if I could help him, I would.
Creating this GoFundMe is the present step I am with this connection.
Finally…
$4,166 would allow Momo to buy a plot of land from a neighbor who has been very sympathetic to his situation. With land, Momo and his sisters would no longer have to worry about paying rent, and it would give them a place to begin building a home.
I am less concerned with raising money for him to buy the parcel of land as I am with him getting means to have some financial sovereignty to himself, but if the means are available, I will ask for them.
Momo is a man of faith, and in this way, he has had influence on me and taught me.
This Matters
Momo has always been extremely grateful for any help he has received but feels a deep sense of shame for being in such a vulnerable position. He is a proud young man who like all of us, just wants the opportunity to work hard, support his family, and build a future without relying on others.
I know it’s a difficult situation; quite frankly, it seems that no matter where you go, it’s a difficult situation, but we have the power to change Momo’s life. With just a small amount of help, we can give Momo the chance to stop living in literal survival mode and start building a life of dignity and self-sufficiency. His hope is to no longer need financial help from others, but he simply needs a chance to get started.
Please, if you can, contribute whatever you can to help Momo and his sisters. Every little bit counts, and your support will make a world of difference to them.
How You Can Help
* Donate: Any amount helps. No contribution is too small.
* Share: Please share this campaign with your friends, family, and networks. Awareness is key, and you never know who might be in a position to help.
* Prayers & Good Thoughts: If you’re unable to contribute financially, your prayers and well-wishes for Momo and his sisters are just as valuable.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Together, we can help Momo and his sisters escape their desperate situation and move towards a brighter future.
With deep gratitude, Charles Shōta翔太 Revard.
