My son, Victor, was diagnosed with leigh's disease when he was 3 months old. It is an incurable degenerative disease. The earlier you show signs, the shorter your lifespan normally is. Infact, we were told not to expect hin to live past 3 years old!
Praise God, he is now turning 6 this weekend! He however, does have lots of health issues. Leigh's disease has caused him to have numours surgeries, muscle tone loss, limited vision and hearing, seizures, breathing on a ventilator, eating from a tube attached to his belly. And needing a wheelchair to get around. In addition he has about 10 different Doctors, a spectrum of medications, and has to have 24/7 nursing. Yet he still manages to smile even while struggling every day. The issue is things get expensive. My wife is a teacher and O work for a church. They are understanding of our frequent absence to take our son to his appointments or when the nurses don't show up. However they do not pay that well, and Insurance only covers so much. There is a good amount of meds and supplies that we end up paying out of pocket. He is getting bigger and we overjoyed! But Victor has gotten to the point where we had to sell our house because my wife could no longer carry him up and down the stairs or his wheelchair, ventilator, and equipment. Im basicly say I would like help to offset some of his medical expenses not covered and help get a house we can retrofit to be wheelchair accessible.
