On January 27th, 2025 my sweet friend Megan experienced every parents worst nightmare. Her 8 year old daughter was super sick...During this unimaginable time, I want to help lessen the financial burden. Any little bit helps!
This is Megan and Raelynn's story in Megan's words.
We were admitted to UK on January 27th with acute respiratory failure secondary to Flu A and septic shock. Raelynn was placed on ECMO that day for her lungs to try and recover. Within a couple of weeks they found that her heart and liver and kidneys were failing and we were converted to a different type of ECMO to try and help her heart so that her other organs could try and recover as well. The virus and infections were causing damage to her heart that worsened a congenital heart condition that she had already had a heart surgery for when she was a baby. She ended up needing another heart surgery while on ECMO and did well. After 38 days on ECMO she began to recover and was able to come off of ECMO on March 6th. She was still on the ventilator but was doing well for about a week and improving until she caught another respiratory virus and had to be placed back on ECMO a second time for an additional week. She began to improve and finally came back off ECMO on March 14th. When she came off ECMO they realized that she could not move anything on the left side of her body and found out that she had had a large stroke at some point while on ECMO. Raelynn was able to come off her ventilator on March 31st and is now on a normal wall oxygen cannula. Due to her prolonged hospital stay and the stroke she is unable to walk or move her limbs on her left side. We have just been transferred to Cincinatti Children’s hospital where we hope to go to inpatient rehabilitation and where we will likely stay at least 4-8 weeks roughly.
