Help Support Maya’s Fight Against Leukemia
Donation protected
Welcome to Maya’s GFM and thank you for taking the time to visit
At the beginning of November, my mom and full-time caretaker to her father (my Opa), celebrated her 62nd birthday. On Monday, Nov. 25th, she was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML).
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer that starts in the bone marrow, which is the soft inner part of bones where new blood cells are made. In AML, the bone marrow produces a large number of abnormal white blood cells called myeloid blasts. These abnormal cells do not develop properly and crowd out normal, good blood cells, leading to problems like infections, anemia (low red blood cell count), and bleeding issues due to low platelet counts.
AML can develop quickly and is most common in older adults. Symptoms often appear suddenly and can include fatigue, fever, frequent infections, easy bruising or bleeding, and weight loss.
Treatment typically involves chemotherapy to kill the cancerous cells, and in some cases, a bone marrow transplant may be needed to replace the diseased bone marrow with healthy cells.
Treatment begins immediately with a 30-day (at minimum) admission to the hospital, with week-long admissions for additional (consolidation) chemotherapy treatments, and possibly a bone marrow transplant at a local cancer center.
Any and every donation is appreciated and will go towards copays, additional expenses for treatment(s), meals for my grandpa and step-dad, who will now take over full time to care for my grandpa, gas for the trek up and down the Cajon Pass to be at my mom’s bedside, and any other expenses that will accrue during this battle.
Thank you
