Help Support Mathew Kadukara’s Stroke Recovery
Donation protected
On January 16th around 4am, Mathew had massive stroke. He was rushed to the local emergency room (LIJ) where he was admitted. By the time he received medical care the damage was done.
Mathew had a cerebellar stroke. This directly affected his ability to balance himself and severely impaired his left side of body.
Due to the lack of staff and rooms available Mathew was not receiving the level of care he should have received. Mathew waited hours and hours before being seen or having any scan done. Due to it being MLK day, the hospital staff did not have sufficient personnel on hand to do an MRI or to adequately care for Mathew.
After realizing the hospital was not able to give the care he needed Evelin, Mathew’s wife, coordinated with a doctor to have him immediately transferred to North Shore University Hospital.
January 17th around 3pm they began his transfer.
Once he arrived to North Shore University Hospital he was taken to the stroke unit and began to receive immediate attention.
The doctors were able to identify the cause of the stroke: Mathew has a clot in his heart. A piece had broken off and made it up to his brain causing the stroke. Due to the clot and to prevent further strokes they started him on a blood thinner to assist in the clot he has in his heart.
Fast forward over the next few days, Mathew was pacing well for a speedy recovery. At this point aside from being weak and disoriented, especially on his left side, the biggest obstacle was his inability to swallow. After the stroke Mathew could not swallow food or liquid. The location of where the stroke occurred has a direct correlation to the muscles that allow us to swallow.
The doctors had to use a nasal feed in order to give Mathew nutrients for recovery.
On January 23rd Mathew complained about severe neck pain. He had been complaining of neck pain for days, but this was different. When asked where his pain was on a scale from 1-10, 1 being very little, 10 being a lot, Mathew replied 11. Joshua, his eldest son, immediately informed
the nurse to which her reply was that it is likely due to the position he has been sitting in and she’s going to request a liquid Tylenol.
Shortly after the conversation with the nurse, Mathew continued to express discomfort and asked for the nurse again.
Mathew’s final words before becoming unresponsive was that he loves his wife and 2 children.
Mathew is currently in a coma and is fighting for his life.
Mathew had a brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the neurological ICU where he was immediately taken for emergency surgery to relieve the brain pressure and drain the blood.
By the time the surgery was conducted the damage had been done. 85% of all the blood was able to be drained, however the hemorrhage caused Mathew’s brain stem to be damaged.
Due to Mathew’s brain stem being damaged, our family has been told by the doctors that Mathew may never wake up from the coma he is in and that if he does it will not be at a meaningful capacity.
March 2nd, Mathew was successful in having the ventilator removed and he is able to breathe on his own.
Mathew is a father of two boys, Joshua and Jonathan. He is a husband to his wife Evelin. Mathew is a God fearing man and this came very unexpectedly in all of our lives.
It’s hard asking people for money during a hard time, but the love coming from friends, family and strangers has meant the world to our family so far, and we think you might be able to help, even if it’s just a little bit.
