For decades, Mark Unruh has given his life to music and teaching. As a composer and performer, his unique ability to find music everywhere has carried him through a remarkable career — one that spans 50 years of playing, 43 years of teaching, and a lifetime of still learning. Before his illnesses, Mark averaged over 2,000 lessons annually and many of his former students are now practicing musicians — something from which he derives enormous pride and delight.

Mark has always been surrounded by — and has contributed deeply to — his extended family of musicians in Delaware and beyond. He’s a multi-instrumentalist of extraordinary range, playing guitar, upright and electric bass, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, trumpet, piano, and more. His skill and versatility have made him indispensable on stages large and small, in recording studios across the country, and even at the Galax Old Fiddler’s Convention in Virginia, where he won guitar honors three times. Mark has always been a country bluegrass player at heart. His “Sunday best” isn’t a suit and tie—it’s black jeans and sneakers, because for Mark, music has never been about appearances. It’s about honesty, humility, and heart. No matter the size of the crowd — a thousand people or a living-room gathering of just a few — he has always said he is simply thankful to give of himself, serve the song, and bond with students, players, and listeners.

But now, he needs help. After years of battling a series of serious gastrointestinal surgeries and complications, he has been unable to work, and the weight of medical bills, prescriptions, and essential living expenses has grown overwhelming. Asking for support is not in his nature, but those who love and respect him are encouraging him to share his story. He shouldn’t have to carry this burden alone.
