Maggie Shanahan-Menkes was diagnosed in early July with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer known as Inflammatory Breast Cancer. She was scheduled for a consultation at the University of Michigan (UofM) on July 21st—but the situation quickly escalated. On July 20th, Maggie was rushed to UofM by ambulance for life-saving care.
Since then, Maggie and her husband, Josh, have been at UofM. After her first round of chemotherapy on July 22nd, Maggie suffered a severe reaction that led to liver failure and fluid buildup in her lungs. She spent four critical days in the ICU, fighting for her life.
Maggie beat the odds and is now out of the ICU! She’s taking the next courageous steps in her battle—with Josh and their children, Izzy, Quinn, Nora, Lydia and Jade, by her side, along with a strong network of family and friends.
Josh has not left Maggie’s side, advocating for her and providing constant support throughout this ordeal. Their family is doing everything they can—but now, they need their community.
If you know the Shanahan-Menkes family, you know they’re the first to help others and the last to ask for help themselves. They are deeply involved in our community, always giving—now it’s our turn to give back.
Maggie’s journey is far from over. Once discharged, she and Josh will be traveling frequently to and from UofM for continued treatment. This will include medical expenses, hotel stays, gas, food, and other unforeseen costs. Every donation—big or small—will help ease their burden and allow them to focus on what matters most: Maggie’s recovery.
Please consider donating and sharing this campaign to support the Shanahan-Menkes family during this incredibly difficult time.
