Hi, my name is Mckenlea Horrell, and I’m starting this GoFundMe to help my mama, Lynn Mesimer.

She would never ask for help herself—that’s just the kind of person she is. She’s always been a giver, constantly putting others before herself.

Thankfully, she works for Milam Plumbing, a wonderful company that’s allowing her to work from home through all of this, which has been such a blessing.

As many of you know, my mom was recently diagnosed with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma. After undergoing a CAT scan and PET scan, we learned that the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes in her neck.

On July 11th, she underwent major surgery, at UNC , including a glossectomy, neck dissection, and biologic graft reconstruction to remove the cancer and rebuild her tongue. During the surgery, doctors removed 37 lymph nodes—4 of which tested positive for cancer, with one showing signs of spreading beyond the capsule.

Because of this, she will need to begin radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

On August 1st, she will meet with the Medical Oncologist at UNC to plan the chemo treatments.

On August 8th, she will meet with the Radiation Team to be fitted for her mask and begin planning for the 6-week treatment.

She will need daily radiation treatments Monday through Friday at UNC for 6 weeks, along with weekly chemotherapy.

To make this as manageable as possible, she and Monty plan to stay in Chapel Hill during the week and return home on weekends. They are hoping to stay at the SECU Family House, which costs $54 a night.

The SECU House doesn’t allow food in the rooms, so they’ll also need to purchase meals each day.

I’m hoping to raise enough money to help cover the lodging, meals, gas, and other travel-related expenses during this difficult time—so that my mom can focus on healing without the added stress of finances.

We are so grateful for the calls, messages, and love we’ve received—it has truly reminded my mom just how many people care about her.
