My name is Lydia and I have twin to twin transfusion syndrome. This condition is found in identical twins only and means they are both connected by veins and vessels in the placenta, which cause one baby to receive more blood and fluid (recipient) and the other less blood and fluid (donor). I found this out when my twins were 18 weeks old, 2 days later we were rushed into fetal laser surgery. Without the surgery I would have lost both babies. However the odds werent perfect, 60 percent for both surviving, 90 percent for one surviving. Our surgury took 3 hours, I was awake the whole time. The picture is after our laser surgery. The doctors removed 3 liters of fluid, we were stage 3 borderline stage 4 (they both would have died at stage 5). There was a big concern that both babies would struggle with the blood flow changes after the surgury. A week later Twin A had survived and Twin B had passed away. I am required to stay home on bed rest and not continue working the rest of my pregnancy. Due to the twin to twin transfusion syndrome and having the laser surgery, I have been struggling to maintain a normal amount of fluid in my womb for my surviving baby A. Having low amniotic fluid has put us in the hospital a few times since our laser surgery, and finally has seemed to stabilize for now at a low normal range. I am required to stay home on bed rest and not continue working the rest of my pregnancy. I am unable to be the main provider for my toddler, myself and my baby.
