Dear friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers,

My brave 12-year-old niece, Lola Struve, recently faced a life-threatening medical emergency that turned her family’s world upside down.

What began as a basic blood work-up quickly became urgent when doctors discovered Lola’s calcium levels were critically high, so high that her heart was at risk of stopping. After extensive testing, physicians found two tumors on her parathyroid gland, one of which was causing these critical levels, along with a hyperparathyroid crisis that was impacting other electrolytes.

Lola was hospitalized for nine days and underwent a complex surgery to remove the tumor, which was attached to her parathyroid and laryngeal nerve. Thanks to the skill and collaboration of her endocrinologist, surgeon, and imaging team, the tumor was successfully removed. She then remained hospitalized for five days for constant heart monitoring, frequent lab work, and to safely transition her over to oral medications.

While the surgery was a success, Lola’s recovery is ongoing. She requires frequent lab work, daily right now, to carefully monitor her calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus levels due to a mild postoperative complication of hungry bone syndrome and ensure her electrolytes remain stable and medications remain properly adjusted. This extended hospital stay and the ongoing medical care have created a significant financial burden for her family.

Throughout this challenge, we have felt God’s presence in powerful ways through our family, friends, coworkers, and so many others who have been praying for Lola. It is truly a miracle that the tumor was found when it was, and a blessing that it was caught before her heart gave out, without anyone even knowing there was an underlying medical condition. We are deeply grateful for the prayers, care, and support that have surrounded her every step of the way.

Lola's parents won't ask for financial help on their own. They are hardworking, loving, and God-fearing people who work multiple jobs and make sacrifices to provide the best life for their kids. But this season has brought more than anyone could have anticipated, and the practical needs are real. That is why I created this fundraiser on their behalf, to give those who feel called a way to help carry some of the weight they are facing.
