Laura and Don's son, Wesley, was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation. In simple terms, part of his brain is pressing down into his spinal canal where it shouldn’t be. This has caused a fluid-filled cyst, called a syrinx, to form in his spinal cord. We've been monitoring the Chiari over the years, but the syrinx is an additional layer of complication we were hoping to never see on his MRIs.
Right now, Wesley seems like his usual self most days, full of energy and joy. But this condition is quietly doing damage we can’t see from the outside. If left untreated, it could lead to permanent nerve damage that would affect his ability to walk, use his hands, or even control basic functions like breathing and swallowing.
After a long, emotional process, full of MRIs, specialists, second opinions, and sleepless nights, they made the difficult but necessary decision to move forward with brain surgery to protect his future. This fall, they will travel to NYC to get Wes the absolute best care they can under a specialized Chiari surgeon. Laura and Don have always been the first to lend a hand, give generously, and support others in times of need. Now, as they face the unknown and unforeseen medical and travel expenses, it’s their turn to receive the care and support they've so selflessly given to so many. Thank you so much for opening your heart to support Laura and family during this difficult time.
