Hi everyone. My name is LaRell Thomas, and I’m working toward my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. Next May, I have an amazing opportunity to study abroad in Germany for two weeks through my program. I’ll be learning about how social work is practiced there and getting hands-on experience working with kids, which is the population I plan to focus on in my career.

My goal is to become a school social worker, so this trip connects directly to what I’m studying and what I want to do long-term. I’ll get to see how another country approaches social work, education, and child development. I think it would help me grow as both a student and future social worker.

This trip also counts as a summer class for my MSW program, which makes it even more meaningful. Instead of sitting in a classroom, I’ll be learning out in the world. This includes meeting professionals, visiting agencies, and seeing firsthand how social work impacts children and families in another culture.

I really don’t want to pass up this experience. Opportunities like this don’t come around often, and I may never get another chance like it again. It’s something that would stay with me for the rest of my life and shape how I support kids and families in the future.
